ถ้าผู้ที่สมควรได้รับพระราชทานเหรียญราชการชายแดนวายชนม์เสียก่อนได้รับพระราชทาน จะได้พระราชทานแก่ทายาทโดยธรรมคนใดคนหนึ่งของผู้นั้นเพื่อเป็นเครื่องระลึกถึงความดีของผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว แต่ทายาทผู้นั้นหามีสิทธิที่จะประดับไม่
